Why? Cause kids in Hit Wizards' families grow up faster.
Noor doesn't think she's big. She's tiny and the world is big and it's sometimes scary but that's why she has a Mummy and a Daddy and an Andrew and an Uncle Noah. They make it okay to be tiny because they keep her safe and sometimes check under her bed in case something bad is hiding there. She's tiny so it's okay if she asks for bed checks.
But tiny doesn't mean dumb or deaf or blind. Tiny doesn't mean that she can't hear Mummy cry a little bit when nobody's listening. Tiny just means she sits a little bit closer to Andrew on the steps as they watch people come and go from the house. There's Izzy-bel and Mr Proudfoot, and Mr Lupin and Mr Prewett. Uncle Noah comes too and he smiles for them but his smile isn't real and he doesn't make jokes. He kisses Noor's forehead and pets her hair and if he comes over late he sometimes sits on the edge of her bed and tucks her in really super tight the way she likes and checks under the bed and in the closet.
Being tiny means she doesn't really understand words like 'hostage' and 'bargaining chip' but she does know what 'trap', 'missing' and 'hurt' mean and she knows that when she hasn't seen or heard from her Daddy in days that those words are even scarier than ever before.
Her Grandmas come over every day. Both of them and they sit and have tea and just 'check-in' with Noor's Mummy. Grandma Robards' eyes are all red and puffy and she twists the chain Grandpa's wedding ring hangs from. Noor's still tiny so she fits just right on the sofa next to her Grandma tucked up under her arm but Grandma can't keep the bad things away - not like a Daddy can.
Noor's tiny but she knows things. She knows everyone's scared and she knows Andrew knows why because Andrew's not tiny anymore and he knows everything. 'cept when she asks him what's happening he just looks mad and sad all at the same time mixed up and tells her 'It's going to be okay' just like all the grownups do.
She doesn't really believe them anymore.
Maybe she's not so tiny after all.
